Tell us more about you

I’m 27 years old. My hobbies are playing rugby, crocheting, and enjoying good food. Last year I joined a choir at work, and I really enjoy practising every week. I went to University in Scotland and loved every minute of it.

What kind of work do you do?

As a Software Engineer, I work on an application that allows customers to make changes to their insurance policy without having to call a Sales Rep.

I work in TypeScript and Javavscript coding languages and each day I get to work with my team to improve our app and solve problems that may come up.

Every day, I learn new things and share my own knowledge with my team and wider unit. I’m part of a team of six people where we work individually and sometimes collaboratively together to solve a difficult problem.

I’m a hybrid worker, which means I'm in the office one day a week, and work from home the rest of the time. It lets me be really flexible when working.

I did Applied IT, Business Studies, and Technology & Design at A Level, then went to Belfast Met and did a Maths A Level condensed course. I then when to university to study Maths but I ended up failing my summer exam. I was given the choice to re-sit the year or change my degree to Computer Science.

As I had passed all of the required classes to change, I switched to Computer Science and in my final year, I applied for a job at Liberty Information Technology.

I started in the summer of 2020 as an Associate Software Engineer and worked from home for the first eight months during lockdown. As restrictions eased, I started going into the office once a month and in the last year I was promoted to Software Engineer. I was given the choice to be a hybrid worker and now I go into the office once a week.

What you do enjoy most about your job?

The culture at work is so fun and I get to meet loads of new people and learn new things every day.

If you could do-over, What would you do differently?

I don't think I would do anything differently. All the choices I made and experiences I had made me the person I am now. I went to university a little later than “normal” and it worked better for me.
