Tell us more about you

I’m a father to two grown up children, Stuart and Natasha. I enjoy reading, listening to music, training, swimming, socialising with friends, getting out in nature, and getting out on my Vespa.

What kind of work do you do?

I work as part of a team that includes a Supervisor, a Team Leader, two Planners, a Systems Analyst, a Transport Clerk, and a Debrief Clerk in an office at our headquarters in Mallusk. I’m responsible for a fleet of 60 lorries and 83 drivers, along with seven office staff.

Maintenance and compliance of the vehicles is paramount. Each vehicle is on a 12-week inspection cycle, where they are brought to the mechanics and all the working parts are serviced to ensure they’re safe to go on the road.

Managing drivers' hours is also a huge part of the job. We must ensure that, at all times, the drivers don’t work more than they’re legally allowed to.

Customer service is a big part of the job. All the routes (up to 50 per day covering all areas of the country) are planned with a view to ensuring that we arrive at customer premises with their delivery on time.

How did you become a Transport Manager ?

I completed my GCSEs and then moved on to college, where I completed my A Levels. I took a year out to earn a bit of money before going to university, but I ended up staying in the world of work and never went on to do a degree. I’ve been involved in Logistics for all of my career. I started as a Warehouse Operative with a company called MFI and progressed through to being a Warehouse Supervisor with a company called Wincanton.

I worked there for 16 years, doing various roles including Stock and Administration Manager, Warehouse Operations Manager and Transport Operations Manager.

I moved to Henderson Group in 2015 as Transport Logistics Manager.

What you do enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy that no two days are the same. Each day presents me with a different challenge, which keeps me focused.

If you could do-over, What would you do differently?

I actually wouldn’t do anything differently. I have no regrets about how things have worked out and believe that each opportunity presented should be seized.
